India’s farm sector is in the throes of a multi-dimensional crisis. Intensive agriculture practices have increased reliance on chemical inputs while degrading our natural resources and contributing to the process of climate change. To address this issue, NHD has taken initiatives to promote sustainable agriculture in semi-arid regions of Bundelkhand & Rajasthan.
This initiative include demonstration of pilot plots and improvement in soil health with reduced inputs are developed in water scarce region of India. The concept involved use of green manure, farm yard manure, use of traditional cropping patterns to improve the soil structure. Through soil analysis it was inferred that the improved soil structure resulted into better water holding capacity, nutrient retention and reduced tillage.
The local communities in Bundelkhand area are also being made aware through food festivals, promotional visits and various training program focusing on problem faced by farmers in chemical intensive farming. Some of the farmers have initiated the sustainable practices in farming. Efforts are on to commence trainings on similar lines in Bharatpur, Rajasthan and Bundelkhand region of UP as well.
INTACH has over the last decade acquired hands on expertise to analyse agricultural conditions and implement practical plans to bring about soil and moisture conservation, reduce water input by 50%, decrease farm input costs. INTACH also has expertise in agro-forestry and permaculture.
