Geoheritage

Every country has various unique geological and geomorphic features which constitute its Geoheritage and tell the tale of the evolution of its landforms. However, Geoheritage has been a neglected feature in the conservation landscape of India. In many countries, the concept of Geoheritage has found much traction as geoparks and geo tourism with sites being properly protected as a part of large bio-diverse landscapes and form part of tourism circuits.

Given the present indifference it can be foreseen that the development juggernaut will overwhelm most of our geoheritage sites before long given the fact that decision makers are oblivious to the needs of conserving geoheritage.

INTACH surveyed and documented extant geo-monument sites which resulted into a monograph outlining threats and recommendations for conservation. The objective of this initiative is to influence policy makes to adopt the draft legislation for protection of geoheritage sites as also to initiate worthwhile projects for geoheritage conservation.
