Sambhar Lake – An Important Wetland & Natural Heritage
2017
Sambhar Lake, India’s largest inland saline wetland, is located in Rajasthan in Western India. It was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1990. This publication presents the study on Sambhar Lake, jointly carried out by CIWSA and INTACH. It builds upon the previous studies, through field surveys, water and soil investigations, satellite maps and GIS mapping of land use and land cover, to advance our understanding of the Sambhar lake and its environs as on date.
Lake Series 1 – Najafgarh Jheel
2018
Najafgarh Jheel is a vast depression lying athwart the Delhi Gurugram boundary. Both the states need to jointly work to revive the Jheel which would yield some 20 MGD (million gallons/day) of water supporting a population of 0.35 million, form a potential Ramsar site, make for an enthralling urban texture, improve real estate values. This publication highlights the several aspects of Najafgarh Jheel and its history, the complex issues which have to be resolved and the steps by which it can be revived.
Lake Series 2 – Hauz Khas Lake
2018
The revival of Hauz Khas lake was a pioneer effort with many replicable lessons. INTACH and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) commenced a project to revive a 700-year-old water body, lying dry for decades, with treated sewage water, a first at that time. The monograph documents the process of revival of the 15 acre lake in 2004.
Rapid Assessment Survey of Ramsar Sites in India
2019
A Rapid assessment study on 26 Ramsar Sites present in India focusing on Current Status, Climate Change Impact, Mitigation Measures and Tourism Potential was undertaken for Ministry of Environment, for India’s 3rd National Communication to UNFCCC supported by UNDP. Field visits, GIS mapping, Land Use Land Cover changes through satellite imagery, assessment of current conservation plans and positive recommendations for their conservation and promotion of eco-tourism have been made.
Lake Series 3 – Bhalswa Lake
2020
Bhalswa an urban water body, historically shaped as horse shoe was formed by the River Yamuna’s due course shift towards the east. Rapidly growing urbanization around the water body has already exploited the associated services. Unregulated with time settlement along the region has increased and resulted in disappearance of the western arm of the lake under landfill site. INTACH has made an effort by developing strategies towards enabling its self-sustenance with CSR support provided by INDUSIND Bank.
Lake Series 4 – Sanjay Lake
2020
Sanjay Lake is a meander scour on the east Yamuna floodplain. Pollted water from surrounding colonies as well as a falling water table afflict the lake. The detailed investigations and conservation plan are provided in this monograph.
Lake Series 5- A monograph on the lakes of Delhi – 2021
